Internationally Educated Nurse Resume for the USA: ATS Tips and Example

Write a US nursing resume that passes applicant tracking systems: format, NCLEX and licence status, keywords and an example summary for internationally educated nurses.

Nurse 🇺🇸 United States Updated Oct 2026

US hospitals and staffing agencies receive large numbers of applications, and most pass through an applicant tracking system (ATS) before a human reads them. For internationally educated nurses the resume has two jobs: get past the software, then show a recruiter at a glance where you stand on NCLEX and licensure.

Format rules for ATS

  • One column, standard headings: Summary, Licensure & Certifications, Experience, Education, Skills.
  • No photo, no date of birth, no marital status. These are not expected in the US.
  • No tables, text boxes or icons. Many ATS parsers skip them.
  • One to two pages.
  • Save as .docx or a text-based PDF.

Put licensure first

Right under your summary, state your status exactly: “NCLEX-RN passed (date)”, “Registered Nurse – [State] licence no. …”, “VisaScreen® certificate obtained”, or “NCLEX-RN scheduled”. Add your home-country licence too. US licensure is state-based: the NCLEX is the national exam, and each state board of nursing sets its own credential-evaluation and English requirements.

Experience that reads well to US recruiters

  • Unit type and size: “32-bed medical-surgical unit”, “Level I trauma ED”.
  • Patient ratio and acuity, if you know them.
  • EHR systems (Epic, Cerner, or your local system — say what it is).
  • Outcomes with numbers you can defend: falls, pressure injuries, readmissions, audit scores.
  • Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, specialty certificates.

Example summary

Registered Nurse with 7 years of med-surg and step-down experience in a 600-bed tertiary hospital. NCLEX-RN passed; VisaScreen® certified. Skilled in telemetry monitoring, post-operative care and patient education. Reduced unit pressure-injury incidence through a nurse-led turning protocol.
